Potatoes au Gratin

Potatoes au gratin is a recipe of french origin, which is very popular in my family. We know it by the name "french potatoes". It can be made as a lacto-ovo vegetarian dish, but traditionally we add cooked or smoked sausage slices in it as well. Either way it is delicious and makes for a very presentable dish for your guests.

Potatoes au gratin recipe

Cooking time:1 hour ( preparation: 30 minutes; baking: 20-30 minutes)

Makes: 6 servings

  • 6 large potatoes
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 oz butter
  • salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 cups water

  1. Wash the eggs and the potatoes.
  2. Fill a large pot with cold water adding the potatoes, the eggs and a pinch of salt. Bring it to a boil and then simmer for 20 minutes (or until a fork can easily penetrate the potatoes).
  3.  Drain the potatoes and the eggs.
  4.  Peel the potatoes when they are cool enough. Slice them in round slices.
  5. Put the eggs under running cold water for 2 minutes, then peel and slice them in round slices.
  6.  Grease a heat resistant glass baking dish with butter, and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
  7. Arrange in layers in alternating rows of sliced potatoes and sliced eggs. (We usually add also slices of cooked sausage or ham).
  8. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and melted butter.
  9. Mix the sour cream and milk and pour the mixture between layers.
  10. Sprinkle melted butter and breadcrumbs on top.
  11. Preheat the oven at 400 F and bake for 15-20 minutes (until the top becomes light brown).
  12. Serve hot in the baking dish.
